Things To Do

There is a ton of activities for all ages on Magnetic Island! From families, to couples, to young and old..Here’s just a few things you could add to your to do list!

Walking tracks around the island are many and range from easy going to more difficult works. There are some beautiful views from many of the tracks and of course you’ll be able to see some of the island’s wildlife up close and personal. (Get more info)

Boating is a popular activity with some beautiful protected bays to enjoy. We’re just 8 kilometres from Townsville so we’re within easy reach for a fabulous day out on the water. The waters surrounding Magnetic Island have extensive seagrass meadows that attract dugongs.

Because of this, Cleveland Bay and all the waters around Magnetic Island are a declared Dugong Protection Area. Look out for dugongs especially in shallow areas and reduce your boat speed if you see a dugong, turtle or other large marine animal.

Fishing around Magnetic Island and the surrounding marine waters are protected in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Restrictions apply to certain areas of the marine parks surrounding the island. (Check the zoning for more info)

Birdwatching is excellent with over 180 species of birds being recorded on Magnetic Island.
Do you love wildlife? At Amaroo on Mandalay you can hand feed lorikeets and kookaburras. Bird feeding takes place at The Balcony – Lorikeets & Cockatoos at 4pm and Kookaburras at 5.30pm. Our resident rock wallabies love to wander around the resort in the early morning and late afternoons, and even koalas pay us a visit. Around the island there is even more wildlife and if you venture on to or into the water, you may see dugongs and sea turtles.

Snorkelling and scuba diving is a fun activity and the Amaroo Tour Desk can put you in contact with the people who know where to go, as well as organising your gear. Ask about the great Shipwreck Trail!

Please phone our Tour Desk to get more info. Ph: (07) 4778 5200
